Everything’s Happening at the Trailhead This Year!
Due to road issues, Big Creek Park is closed, so all Saturday & Sunday bike events will take place at the trail system. That means check-in, bike club, vendors, food, beverages, and all the action will be centered around the skills park area near the finish line at the base of the trails.
Yes, parking is limited and you’ll need to ride your bike in—but hey, that’s what we’re here for, right? To ride bikes!
Please read the parking and access info below carefully and give yourself plenty of time.
Thanks for your patience and good vibes—we’re stoked to ride with you!
HOW DO I GET TO THE TRAILS?
LOCATION: Big Creek Trails, Newport, Oregon
Big Creek Trails – base of trails
Parking is extremely limited so please see below for directions on where to park.
🚗 Where Do I Park? How Do I Get to the Trails?
Saturday (Practice Day):
All participants and spectators should park at Agate Beach Wayside. From there, walk or bike the short .09-mile Ocean to Bay Path to the gravel lot at NE Harney St. & NE Big Creek Rd. We encourage everyone to bike to the trailhead from this point—it’s a scenic 1.3-mile ride along a gravel road by the reservoir.
⚠️ Please note:
- The road will be open to local traffic on Saturday, so use caution.
- Parking is very limited near the trailhead. Volunteers will help direct vehicles.
- No trailers should attempt the gravel road—there isn’t enough space to turn around or park.
Sunday (Race Day):
Again, park at Agate Beach Wayside and walk or bike the .09-mile Ocean to Bay Path to the gravel lot at NE Harney St. & NE Big Creek Rd. From there, it’s a 1.3-mile ride up NE Big Creek Rd. to the trailhead.
🚧 On Sunday, the gravel road will be closed to through traffic and open only to event vehicles and racers on bikes. Racers must ride to the race course.
If you’re picking up your race packet on Sunday, check in between 7:15–8:15 AM at the base of the Big Creek Trails near the finish area (follow signage). After that, it’s a 3-mile ride to the top of the course.
If you already picked up your packet Saturday, just plan to arrive with plenty of time to park and ride in. We recommend allowing at least 40 minutes—racing begins promptly at 9:00 AM.
💧 Amenities at the bottom of the course:
- Water station
- Porta-potties

👨👩👧👦 What If My Family Wants to Watch me Race on Sunday?
Spectator access is a little limited unless you’re on a bike—but we’ve got you covered:
🚐 On Sunday only, we’ll have 2 spectator shuttles running from the gravel lot near Big Creek Park to the bottom of the race course.
- Shuttles begin at 7:45 AM
- They are for spectators only, not racers
- Bike racks will be available on shuttles
🚲 Family and friends are also welcome to bike the 1.3 miles along the closed gravel road to the course. Once there, they can find a safe viewing spot along the course or hang out near the finish line, which is close to the gravel road and a great place to cheer racers in!
💧 Water and a porta-potty will also be available at the bottom of the course for spectators.
Let’s keep it fun and respectful—this trail system is in a neighborhood, so please park thoughtfully and be kind to the local community.
CAN I REGISTER ON RACE DAY?
Yes, but we prefer you register earlier. If you must register on race day you will pay a higher price. Please see the above schedule for packet pick-up.
ARE HELMETS REQUIRED?
Yes, helmets will be required for both events.
WHAT IS THE MINIMUM AGE TO RACE THE FLOW-DURO CHALLENGE?
The minimum age is 9 years (by 12/31/25) old based on the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association guidelines. This is not a race for beginners as the courses are fast & technical and have steep climbs to reach the top where the race begins.
WILL THERE BE A PRE-RIDE OF THE FLOW-DURO COURSE?
Yes, there will be a Pre-Ride of the course on Saturday @ 1 PM.
DO I HAVE TO DO ALL 3 FLOW DURO CHALLENGE RACES? OR CAN I JUST SIGN UP FOR ONE?
You can sign up for one or all of the Flow Duro Challenges races. You can only be considered for the “Champion of the Dirt Wave Series” if you attend all 3 races.
CAN I CHANGE MY RACE CATEGORY ONCE I HAVE RACED?
You cannot switch race categories on the same day. However, if you’ve finished racing for the day, you can change your category for the next race, either moving up or down. Please note that any points you earned in your original category will not transfer to the new category.
We recommend staying in the category you originally registered for. Additionally, prize money is only available for those registered in CAT 1. If you placed on the podium in CAT 2 last season, you may want to consider registering for CAT 1 this year.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Event Director Daniella Crowder at Director@OregonRides.com.
WHY ARE THERE ONLY 100 SPOTS AVAILABLE IN THE FLOW DURO CHALLENGE RACE?
We are only allowing 100 people to register for the race so we have plenty of time to do 2 timed laps down the race course and need to allow time for climbing back to the top in between.
WHERE DO WE STAY?
Camping: Newport is home to two fantastic State Parks; South Beach State Park & Beverly Beach State Park.
There are also camping options at the Port of Newport.
Newport is also home to many fantastic hotels in all price ranges.
WILL THERE BE FOOD OR DRINKS AVAILABLE?
We will have extra water available for riders at the trailhead. Come prepared with your own water, power bars, snacks, etc. We will have a food cart on site from 11-3pm on Saturday and 11-2:30 on Sunday for you to purchase food on your own. We will have local beer on tap for purchase as well.
I AM A BEGINNER RIDER, WHAT SHOULD I SIGN UP FOR?
Our Saturday event has a beginner option. If you have been interested in coming to check out the trails but weren’t sure where to ride, this is the perfect event to have a fun & supportive ¨Guide¨ show you the trails. The Beginner Ride is great for someone new to riding that wants to check out the trails at a mellow pace. Beginner Ride: Easy, no-drop ride for adults.
Our Sunday Race is not really recommended for beginner riders. The course demands that riders have some technical skills as the course is fast and there is a steep, black diamond area at the top.
HOW DO I SUPPORT THE LOCAL TRAILS?:
You may donate directly to the Newport Trail Stewards (NEWTS), the local bike club that builds and maintains all of the trails in Newport.
